takes the stage." the "l.a. times," "romney sharp and steady in first presidential debate." >> under the president's policies, middle-income americans have been buried. they are just being crushed. >> and challenge on obama's hits on his own policies point by point. >> governor romney's central economic plan calls for a $5 trillion tax cut. >> virtually everything he said about hi tax plan is inaccurate. >> for 18 months he's been running on this tax plan, and now five weeks before the election he's saying that his big bold idea is nevermind. >> let me repeat what i said. i'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. >> the president's lackluster response sent critics into a tail spin and put team obama on defense. >> i don't know what he was doing out there. he had his head down, he was enduring the debate rather than fighting it. the latest thing we got from romney because he said so, was, you know what i want to do with people when they are poor? shove them in the emergency room. where was obama tonight? >> progressives from chris matthews to bill maher to michael moore al
romney was breath-takingly dishonsest last night. mitt romney was more in control of the debate and walked all over jim lehrer and obama didn't fight back. obama had the facts and didn't use them, but this is what obama does. in 2008 when he ran against hillary clinton, people said he wasn't fighting hard enough and against john mccain and in the health care debate, he wasn't fighting hard enough. he won all the fights. >> what's interesting, our first team and others brought up the comparison of the incumbent curse. george w. bush, ronald reagan in '84, george h.w. bush in '92, the president didn't seem to be on his game. mitt romney made a surprise appearance to a cpac event in denver still courting the conservatives but say if you know people that voted for president obama, tell them to come on over to our side. that's ironic because i don't imagine he knows many conservative republicans who voted for president obama the last time or plan to this time. nevertheless, you're no fan of governor romney. did you become a fan last night as a conservative who has doubted his credibi
. >> that's the end of the first presidential debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by
romney as a souvenir of the night he crushed you in that debate. >> my gosh. okay. >> so that's what he's doing. because i'm sitting there going, what's he doing? >> good morning, everyone. >> it makes more sense. it fills in the blank. >> that gives us proper context. >> it is friday. it is friday, thank god. i need two days away from all of you people. october 5th. >> mika, hold on. >> no, stop. >> you need a couple of days away from politics. >> no, i don't. >> mika, all day yesterday -- >> what you say off tv sometimes stays off tv. >> i'm not going to repeat what you said. i've never seen her so depressed. she sort of wandered around. >> it was just one day. >> i swear to god, she was wandering around getting lost in crowds. >> no, that's just how i walk. >> i swear to god, she'd go, "he might win." >> no, i did not do that. now you're making up stuff. i do get lost in crowds, but that's because i have no sense of direction and i'm on my iphone. okay. >> chosen one may not be chosen this time. >> no. >> and it's freaking her out. >> it was a bad night. i will say this, i don't know
did in the debate! obama lost despite mitt romney doing this. >> i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs, i'm going to stop other things. i like pbs. i like big bird. i actually like you, too. i'm not going to spend money on things to borrow money from china to pay for it. >> he [ bleep ] fired big bird! he still won walking away. romney won with the sound up. >> you're entitled to your own airplane and your own house but not to your own facts. >> romney won with the sound off. dude, he's yelling at you! look up! look up! what are you looking at? what are you writing that's so important? what are you doing -- oh, that's not -- oh, i didn't realize. that is impressive work. i didn't realize that. maybe you could give that to mitt romney as a souvenir of the night he crushed you in that debate. >> my gosh. okay. >> so that's what he's doing. because i'm sitting there going, what's he doing? >> good morning, everyone. >> it makes more sense. it fills in the blank. >> that gives us proper context. >> it is friday. it is friday, thank god. i need two days away from all of y
:. >> in probably a presidential debate. >> rose: i also heard this was not a new romney in the context of have i seen him before. >> yes, mike barnicle saw him in the race for governor when he did win that against shannon o'brien and he has put on that performance but i moderated one of the debates the last time time around at the reagan library, he was good but wasn't this, he was good in the opponents that were rather week, like newt and rick santorum, many in the political center but he faced the president of the united states today and walked in the room like he was a bigger, better man and the president, he had that self-confidence which this president is going to have to face down a couple mo times and he is going to have to do it with at least a quality of presence and self-confidence. i thought last night it was about self-confidence. the president didn't seem to be aware, and at least cosmetically of the fact the camera was always on him and wasn't like the nixon kennedy debates and not reaction shots but always a split screen so when he had his head down, you everything at times, like
governor romney in debate prep versus the choice of rob portman, the senator from ohio to play the president, i think if you look at senator kerry, i think his, my guess is that in prep he was acting like the mitt romney that they were expecting and never achieved that mode because -- >> rose: that is a good point. >> there is no reason to think you would face somebody like that, i think it was reinforced not just watching romney over months and months and in the debate representations i beat kerry was showing the side of rom think that would be easy pickings for the president. >> rose: looking at the content of the debate and the fact that president obama would make a point and then governor romney would come back and say, no, no, no that that's not what i favor. where are we on this content debate about the 5 trillion and what we ought to understand is the fact check and reality of the numbers? >> well, in any number of areas what governor romney has done as he said last night he laid out the broad principles but what he has done after laying out the broad principles he has g
the debate strategy tells you which campaign this they won last night and which did not win. mitt romney spoke on tv after the network newscasts had gone on the air. that forced the tv networks through the day and the evening broadcast this is evening to use pictures from last night's debate again and again. president barack obama, however, had two rallies including one in denver, colorado where he had sort of a chance to do a do-over from last night. take a listen. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. >> now larry, mitt romney is speaking this evening in virginia. we'll see both candidates in virginia and ohio over the next 24 hours. that will give viewers on television a chance to decide whether that was the real mitt romney last night or it was the real barack obama at the debate, l
an advantage in the way the non-rules are in this debate tonight. and i also think that mitt romney has come off a series of really easy debates. we have to remember, mitt romney triumphed in a republican presidential field that was the worst republican presidential field in the history of the republican party. those are the debates he won. he was the one on the stage who did not look outright insane, compared to the rest of them. that isn't going to work for him tonight. he's going against the best debater mitt romney has ever been up against in his life. this is going to be, i think, a really great debate. >> preparing for this, i went back and looked at some of the 1994 debates between romney and kennedy, looking at some of that to see, you know, how does he deal with a democratic opponent? we've seen him debate a lot of republicans, but not a lot of democrats. and if it's half as fun as it was between him and ted kennedy, we are in for a very, very fun night ahead. lawrence, thank you for that, particularly on the rules. i think that was a really important point. we'll talk with you agai
, first of all, how much does this employment number blunt mitt romney's debate momentum? and do you think the white house is going phew, relieved at this? >> if not popping champagne bottles. two-ways in which this number was so useful to the white house yesterday. it got the unemployment rate below 8% which has been kind of a line of demarkation. the romney folks have made a big deal about it being above 8% for so many months all through president obama's tenure. the other thing is the timing. i mean, all the reviews from the debate has been so negative for president obama. and this just automatically changed the subject. at 8:30 yesterday morning we stopped talk thing about the debates and started talking about improvement in the jobless numbers >> yes. david with respect to the conspiracy theorists out there, mitt romney is not latched onto all threat rick. but could all this talk, this talk, could it damage him in the long run? i mean, in some ways all it does is just highlight the fact we're talking below 8%. >> absolutely, alex. i think that the romney campaign didn't respond to tha
candidates hunkered down in last-minute debate preparations. mitt romney is out in the mile high city carb loading at chipotle today. >> how are you doing? >> are you ready for tomorrow? >> hi there. getting there. how are you? >> getting there. just giving him another six years. indeed, you know what mitt romney's been working hard, maybe fighting for a little air when he goes on a nostalgic riff. in this case the rocky mountains are just the right height. >> when avis boy my mom and dad used to read to me from a book called "men to match my mountains." perhaps we should change the title to "men and women to match my mountains" because right here men and women have matched the mountains of colorado. >> he's really working on the zingers. we see what you did there, mitt, adding women into the mix. nice. anything to do with the president's 18-point lead with women putting him four points above romney nationwide? no, i'm sure not. by the way, the same poll shows voters expect 54% to 28% that the president will win the dae bates. the president doesn't seem too worried. delivering pizza to a n
't blame the president for playing it cool. after all, he's seen romney in a few previous debate performances. >> will you follow your father's example? >> maybe. you know, i don't know how many years i will release. >> governor romney, you say you don't want to go and round up people and deport them, but you also say that they would have to go back to their home countries and then apply for citizenship. so if you don't deport them, how do you send them home? >> well, the answer is self-deportation. >> rick, i'm speaking. >> the newspaper -- >> i'm speaking. i'm speaking. you get 30 seconds. >> time for you -- >> this is the way the rules work is i get 60 seconds -- >> but the american people want the truth. >> you get 30 seconds to respond. anderson? >> 10,000 bucks? $10,000 bet? >> by the way, new polling shows nearly 40% say the debates will be important to their vote. let's get to our panel now. dana mill bank, political cl columnist, michael crowley, and here in new york ron christie. dana, if i might start with you. an insightful political observer such as yourself has seen
." in wednesday's debate you saw romney pushing moderator jim lehrer around pretty much at will. eventually president obama joined in. but here is a flashback of the romne romney/lehrer face-off from jimmy fallon. >> it's my priority to repeal obama -- >> okay, now, governor romney you are well over the two minute allotted -- >> jim, i still have 30 seconds here on -- >> if -- >> jim, jim -- just politely going to hush you up a bit. >> going to keep you. >> na, na, na. >> respect the governor -- >> jim, do us all a favor and just -- i think it's a little weird that you're here still. you can just leave and do whatever you want. >> no, i'm the nod rater here. >> jim -- >> hold on now. i'm going to have to ask you to step down, okay? ja, ja, ja. >> that's just a noise. >> jim, jim, jim, would you shut the [ bleep ] up. >> that was a facsimile i think. more from the debate aftermath. the big bird nonsense continues. how did the former gop candidates feel about the mitt romney pledge to stop funding for pbs if elected president? first, rick santorum last night on cnn. >> would you kill big bird
package and said he would go to the debate unless there was a bailout package. so in the middle of all this, we didn't know if john mccain would show up on the night. so that's september. and that romney has now had a tough month. it is september. people ask mala time, what do you think? what is going to happen? i would say it's pretty early. if you think about it, the 18 day sound like a lifetime to me. so he's got two lifetimes. it was like 40 days. a lot can happen on the campaign trail between now and the end.
